My Review

A lovely, heart-warming summer story that not only captures the heart of Santorini but also pulls the reader in to reveal hidden family secrets, friendship and family disagreements. The descriptions of the island are simply wonderful and the characters get under your skin or even vice versa - the characters are wonderful and the island gets under your skin - definitely a book to read on holiday this year.

My Review

The war is not quite over yet for the East End Angels so there is lots of drama and problems for all the girls to resolve. It was fascinating to discover how life pans out for them all - perhaps not the way that they would necessarily have envisioned but as the war draws to a close, they all have to think about the next path they will take. I don't want to say any more and spoil it so you'll just have to read to the end. A lovely conclusion to the series, full of warmth and camaraderie that captures the real East End atmosphere.

Between the orange groves

Between the Orange Groves

In a small village, set among the wild mountains of Cyprus, two families
of different faiths share a seemingly unbreakable friendship based on
mutual respect and deep affection. Mothers and daughters share their
daily secrets, fathers and sons support each other as they live their lives
between the fragrant pine trees and orange groves. It's here that two boys,
Lambros and Orhan, grow up side by side, as close as brothers. Their lives
are inextricably linked, but as their fortunes shift and time passes, an
unforgivable act of betrayal takes place, setting in motion a chain of events
that tears the two friends and their entire families apart...
Many decades later and now an old man living in London, Lambros decides
to share his painful memories with his daughter Stella; transporting her back
to an island brimming with passion and at its heart a scandal that still haunts
those involved. Is it too late for forgiveness? Or can the next generation embark
on a journey of their own to help mend the damage done all those years ago?
From Nadia Marks, the bestselling author of Among the Lemon Trees
and Secrets Under the Sun, comes Between the Orange Groves,a moving
tale of desire, burning secrets and forbidden love.
About the author
Nadia Marks

Nadia Marks (nee Kitromilides, which in Greek means bitter lemons), grew up in London but was born in Cyprus where her novel Secrets Under the Sun is set. An ex creative director and associate editor on a number of leading British women's magazines, she is now a novelist and works as a freelance writer for several national and international publications.

My Review

Nadia Marks really manages to get under the skin of Cyprus and through the memories of an old man now living in London, she takes us back on an epic journey to what Cyprus was like in the 1950s. it is the beginning of discontent with English rule yet the Greek and Turkish communities manage to get along fine. It was fascinating to read about this period in Cypriot history, unlike most novels that deal with Cyprus who concentrate on the 1974 partition. This is a heartbreaking tale of families divided, love lost and cross-cultural forbidden love. Totally absorbing, very moving and a story that by its very nature can't have a completely happy ending although I was keeping my fingers crossed that Stella could fulfil her father's wish to find his childhood friend.

A Cornish Affair

A Cornish Affair

In the close-knit community of Carrenporth in Cornwall everyone knows everyone else’s business. Luke Carrack is only too aware of this. He’s been away for two years but nothing has changed – from the town gossips who can’t see past the scandal of his childhood, to the cold way he is treated by some of his so-called family.
The only person who seems to understand is local hotelier’s daughter Cat Trevelyan, although even Luke’s new friendship with her could set tongues wagging.
But Carrenporth is about to experience far bigger scandals than the return of Luke Carrack – and the secrets unearthed in the process will shake the sleepy seaside town to its core …

My Review

I really enjoy Jo's books and this one is no exception. She has a way of making her characters jump off the page, following with anticipation as we see how Cat and Luke's relationship develops only for the rug to be pulled from under our feet as a misunderstanding causes them to separate. Cat has her own journey of self-discovery and it is only when she finds out who she is that the two can possibly think about a future together. The story is set partly in Cornwall and partly in Italy with lovely descriptions of both. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

The violin maker's daughter

THE VIOLIN MAKER’S DAUGHTER by Sharon Maas

When the Nazis march onto the cobbled streets of Colmar on November 1st 1940, Josef, a Jewish violin maker, gathers his wife and daughters closely to him and tells them everything will be alright.

But one year later, three sharp knocks on the door at midnight turn his seventeen year old daughter Sarah’s world upside down. As the oldest child, Sarah must be the first to leave her family, to make her escape in a perilous journey across France via Paris to Poitiers. And she must hide who she is and take a new name for her own safety. For now, bilingual Sarah is no longer a French Jew but a German girl.

As she bids farewell to her beloved father and family, Sarah has hope, against all odds, that she will see them again when the war is over. But, travelling through the mountains she finds herself in terrible danger and meets Ralf, a German deserter, who risks his own life to save her.

Ralf and Sarah continue their journey together, keeping their identities secret at all cost. But when Ralf is captured, will Sarah pay the ultimate price for sharing who she really is?

A gripping and heart-breaking account of love, bravery and sacrifice during the terror of war. A story of standing up for what you believe in; even if it’s going to break your heart. Perfect for fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz and The Ragged Edge of Night

My Review

I enjoy books set during WW2 and this book is no exception. The strength lies in the development of the characters and in the poignant depiction of the suffering the inhabitants of German-occupied France endured. I was impressed by the research that the author had evidently undertaken to make the story as true to real events as possible. I felt that it was really Sarah's story as we see her try to escape, being a naive, sheltered seventeen-year-old. What happens to her must have been beyond her comprehension. Having said that, and in the light of what happens to her later, she is totally indiscreet and seems to have little awareness of the danger she is putting herself and others in. The story is inevitably sad in parts and although Sarah has to endure much, it was refreshing that for her, in part, there is at least one happy outcome. I will be reading more from this author.

My Review

I love to travel vicariously through the power of words; such is the strength of this book that I have now added Croatia to my 'must visit' list. This is a lovely story which has everything - characters who dislike each other on sight, self-obsessed models, fabulous locations and underneath it all very human problems. The 'posh' guests aboard the yacht really show how the other half live and yet my heart is with Maddie all the way. There are some funny moments and some serious moments, which add depth to the book yet overall it is a warm, delicious summer read. Time to save up for that cruise as you'll want to visit all the fabulous places in the book.

The dreams Zelda and her fellow new residents had of setting up a new life might be slipping away. But a friendship with restauranteur Luca could be about to unlock the possibilities that lie in the local lemon groves. My Review

I absolutely loved this book! The setting - a small village in the foothills of Mount Etna, surrounded by lemon groves, immediately piqued my interest. Add in a group of less than welcoming locals and a bunch of people thrown together who are determined to stay and make a future for themselves then you have the makings of a great story. The characters are perfectly portrayed and jump off the page, inviting the reader into their lives. This lovely heart-warming story will stay with you and might even lead you to adventures of your own. I now want to visit Sicily more than ever but for now, will content myself with a glass of limoncello.

As the hours tick by, Dylan’s red baseball cap is found on the beach and Faye finds herself being questioned by the police. They want to know everything about the man she married - is Faye ready to face her husband’s dark past? Or will she have to confront her own secrets first?

And just how far will a mother go to save her only child?

From the million-copy-bestselling author of The Secret Mother and The Perfect Family, this utterly gripping psychological thriller will make you gasp out loud as you race towards the unforgettable twist. If you loved The Girl on the Train and The Wife Before You this book is for you.

a time-travel twist.

My Review

This has characters so believable that it feels like you are reading someone's life story - a colleague or friend who entrusts you with the worst thing that could possibly happen to a mother. Imagine planning the perfect holiday - you've been looking forward to spending some much-needed family time together and then one day, totally out of the blue, your husband and son disappear. The tension is insurmountable as we question Faye's husband's motives. It's one of those books that you race through and then just don't want to end. Brilliant exploration of how childhood secrets can forge our adult character with a clever ending.

A very French affair

45141907. sy475

From Southport to the South of France – this is going to be a summer to remember!

Life just got a whole lot more complicated for thirty-eight-year-old single mum Liv. Her son Jake is practically perfect in every way, but he’s started asking some difficult questions, and the answers lie in a holiday romance twenty years ago. Back when Liv was staying with her aunt on the French Riviera…

Returning to the Cote d’Azur, with its white sandy beaches, her supportive aunt, and exquisite wine and cheese is harder than it sounds though. Because – if she’s going to give Jake the answers he needs – Liv knows she has to hunt down her first love Andre. And since she’s a professional baker rather than a professional investigator, she doesn’t even have a clue where to start.

At first, finding the one that got away proves even trickier than she thought. And if she succeeds, how will he take the bombshell secret Liv has been keeping? Liv has to do the best thing for her family, but does that mean closing the door on this very French affair?

A joyful, laugh-out-loud story about second chances, secrets and sunshine! The perfect summer read for fans of Carole Matthews, Jenny Colgan and Sophie Kinsella.

My Review

This is such a lovely story of a long-lost love, family secrets and second chances. The setting is superb as who doesn't want to read about France's Cote d'Azur?  When you add a bakery and a handsome Frenchman then it's pretty much perfect. I loved Liv's aunt and her wacky friend who add a touch of colour to the book but it is the relationships that develop in the search for Liv's first love and how this will affect her son, Jake. Lovely book to curl up with in the garden or on the beach but make sure you have plenty of time as this is a book you'll want to read in one go.
