Going Upside Down - Elise Williams

Lori Malone is at a crossroads in her life: should she return to her Sociology degree which she carelessly abandoned, or should she follow her dreams and travel to the other side of the world? Although tempted by her friend Toni’s incessant persuasion to join her in Australia, Lori knows that her funds just won’t stretch 16,000 kilometres – that is until she receives the wedding invite.
Accompanying her widowed father to a family wedding in Brisbane, Lori is intrigued to delve further into her new Australian family’s rich history and subsequent secrets. A recurring dream resurfaces, throwing light on an elusive and unspoken member of her Australian family. Thus, Lori Malone is on a quest to find out.
Before Lori is reunited with her extroverted friend Toni in Sydney, she meets her Cousin Luke and his best friend Red, who share their lives together in a plush Bondi Beach apartment. Lori is instantly attracted to the toned and tanned red headed surfer, but can’t quite work out his relationship with her cousin: If they are partners, then why did she wake up next to Red after a boozy night out and why was Luke with her best friend Toni ?
Leaving the safety net of Sydney behind, Lori and Toni prepare to embark on an adventure, travelling and working their up north to Queensland, closely followed by Toni’s new Australian boyfriend, Greg. Securing jobs on a prestigious Whitsunday Island, life is bliss apart from Lori’s recurring dream – there’s someone or something watching her every move.
Determined to shrug off her increasing paranoia, Lori, Toni and Greg move onto Cairns. In Cairns they meet up with Rob, a fellow Yorkshire man, who they briefly met on Hook Island where they were completing a PADI course. Toni, intent on putting her match making skills to work, perseveres to ignite a mutual attraction between her friend (who is now emulating a gooseberry) and Rob. Toni pulls out all the stops to bring them together – after all, they are perfect for each other. Thus, she is thrilled when Rob whisks Lori up to Cooktown to trace her family history.
Love triangles, perilous outback adventures and a few dodgy jobs along the way, contribute to the mystery that surrounds Lori’s elusive relative. Now, all Lori has to do is confront her heart. Does she return to her studies in England where there is a good chance she will meet back up with Rob, who coincidentally lives a mere 20 miles away? Or does she follow her lifelong dream of living in Australia? Unfortunately, Lori is an extremely indecisive individual.
Just who or what will help her choose the right path? And will she ever find out who this elusive relative is?

 My Review

This book is where ‘rom com’ meets a travel guide. It’s a whirlwind tour of Australia as Lori Malone visits Australia with her Yorkshire family for a wedding down under. I loved the descriptions of Australia as they vividly brought alive a country I would love to visit one day. Elise Williams also treats the subject of the native Aborigines with great sensitivity without being at all preachy. Running throughout the book are Lori’s romantic encounters as she can’t decide between her cousin’s friend and a Doncaster lad she meets on her travels. Will she stay in Oz or return to the UK? You’ll have to read it to find out. I did get a trifle confused at all Lori’s family’s distant relations but thankfully there is a guide in a nutshell at the end to clear up any misunderstandings. A very enjoyable holiday read.

4/5

I am originally from the suburbs of Manchester, but now live with my two teenagers in a small market town in Lancashire. My love of reading started as a young girl, following the adventures of Enid Blyton’s  Secret Seven and Famous Five books. My formative years saw me furtively loaning racier novels from the library by Harold Robbins and Jackie Collins, much to the consternation of my mother! However, besides the racy elements, I enjoyed being transported to the glitzy world of Hollywood and beyond. I was soon unable to control my itchy feet and at the age of eighteen, having finished college with a view to working in the local travel agent, I decided to see the world with my own eyes. With little funds and the constant need to work, I experienced cultures and customs, otherwise unknown to the tourist industry. Like many people, I can’t remember what I did yesterday, but I do remember vividly memories of my travels, some of which inspired my debut novel - Going Upside Down. I like to describe my writing as ‘chick lit with a travel kick’ and have a plethora of drafts running around in my head, eager to make their way to my laptop.

Returning to my life in the green hills of Lancashire, I eventually conformed and became a full time housewife and mother for seven years, until my children’s primary school teacher encouraged me to apply for a position as a cover supervisor in a local High School. Ten years later, I am still there - aiding and encouraging pupils to embrace the written word. Needless to say, Collins and Robbins have been replaced by Golding and Steinbeck! I do love reading with the pupils and the calmness that ensues. Furthermore, I feel blessed that for thirteen weeks of the year, I am able to gaze out of my bedroom window at the uninterrupted view of green fields and tap away to my heart’s content on my new laptop.
Finally, I hope you enjoy reading my debut novel as much as I have writing it; I assure you, there’s more to come.

Can you summarise your latest work in just a few words?
Yes, Romance and family revelations

What was the inspiration for this book?
I love a good beach read and the majority of the books I read always have an element of escapism in sun drenched countries. Australia has a special place in my heart thus I wanted to steer away from the typical Australian travelogue and mix chick lit fiction with the cultural indigenous history and also put some of the lesser known outback towns on the map.

Did you do any research for the book?
Yes I did. Most of it was via the internet, researching the aboriginal culture and facts about the different cities and towns. I also had fun finding humorous Australian colloquialisms, which I hope will make the reader smile.

How do you decide on the names for your characters?
Sometimes a name just springs to mind. Sometimes I look around the staff room at work and think – ah, yes his or her name will suit my character. However, most of the time, names which I have always liked, form the names for my characters.

Which writers have influenced your own writing?
I highly respect Emily Barr, author of Cuban Heels. Also, Paige Toone, author of Lucy in the Sky and Belinda Jones, author of I love Capri, introduced me to chick lit novels with an element of escapism and travel.

What are you working on next? Do you have a WIP?
Yes, I do have a WIP. I am very excited about this one as it was my first idea to start writing. However, I knew I would only be able to start it when the time was right – like NOW! All I can reveal at this stage is that it is set in Crete and involves a young English girl and a Greek kamaki!

    Tell us about your travels.
I feel blessed that from the age of eighteen, I more or less travelled and worked around the world for ten years. I first got bitten by the travel bug when I answered an advert in the local paper for employment opportunities at the Butlins camps. So, after little deliberation, I boarded a train to Minehead in Somerset and from there, well the rest is travel history. Returning home to the safety net of my parents and home comforts for a few weeks at a time and to recharge my batteries, the countries I visited and worked in thereafter, in chronological order are –  Athens, Jersey, Crete, Israel, Holland, Guernsey, Australia, New Zealand, 16 states of the USA, Canada, Central America – England – my homeland. Since then, the usual package holiday to Spain and Greece.

Tell us about your childhood.
I had a wonderful childhood growing up in the suburbs of Manchester with my parents and two brothers. We were fortunate to live in a drive full of children, where we spent many adventures down on the field, making dens and rope swings over a murky brook. Then in my early teens, while my friends spent their free time hanging around bored and restless on local parks or watching endless television, I was to be found in the back garden helping to build a 27 foot yacht! Five years it took us to finally make it seaworthy. Ironically, when the time came to reap the benefits and eventually sail in her, I decided to go on my travels! However, I did have the opportunity to sail in ‘Megan’ a few times in between travelling. I am forever grateful to my parents who throughout my formative years kept me on an even keel and later on believed in me and persuaded me to follow my dreams. What more could I ask for?

What are you reading at the moment?
I am reading ‘Precious Metal’ by Michelle Flatley, part of the Modern Dreams collection from Salt Publishers

Do you have any advice for new writers?
Yes. If you really want to write, then just do it! Just remember, patience is a virtue.

Excerpt from Elven Jewel (Book 1)

This is an excerpt from chapter 5 of Elven Jewel and the first time we see the beast.  The characters are 2 elves: Princess Shari-Rose and her guardian Daeron; the dwarven brothers Baja and Raja; and four brave halflings: Old Fandri; his son Fendi; friend Randir and a huntress named Sienna. They have been tracked to an inn by their adversary, the Vergai invaders.   I hope you enjoy it.

They followed the sounds of struggling around the corner of the inn and saw an incredible sight.  A sopping wet Princess, wearing only a towel, was being held by the arms and legs by four of the scaly Vergai.  Another of the creatures was trying to muffle her screams with his clawed hand, which she was biting on as hard as she could and causing him to growl in frustration.

All around them was a battle.  Sienna held a green-stained dagger in one hand and was struggling with three of the creatures, two of which had arrows protruding from their torsos.  Green blood was drying around the arrow shafts. The huntress stabbed at the invaders and aimed at the thinnest area of their thick hide on the sides of their neck.  Her bond fairy was a short distance away and was so intent in watching the fight that he did not see a Vergai’s rough hand closing around him from behind.  The Vergai clapped his hands together and both fairy and halfling collapsed to the ground unconscious.

Fendi had grabbed a long dagger from the inn and Old Fandri drew his broad sword.  Fendi was momentarily stunned by being in such close proximity to the large and fearsome Vergai.  He exchanged a wide-eyed glance with his father, who gave a short nod.  Together they charged towards the Vergai with a roar.  Old Fandri stepped ahead to engage a Vergai with his sword and didn’t see one of the creatures whip around and strike Fendi solidly with his long thick tail.  The young halfling gave a grunt and fell to the ground.

The final four Vergai were moving to surround Raja, who was flailing about a two-headed axe, as though he was berserk.  Baja gave a yell and rushed to his aid.  Baja threw a small axe, which felled one of the creatures, and then the dwarf got out a large wooden club and proceeded to bash all the Vergai on their knee caps.  The two dwarfs were much shorter than the Vergai (who were about human height), but they made up for it in their fighting prowess.  The Vergai all stood well back from the half-crazed little men.

Old Fandri entered the fight over by the Princess.  One of the Vergai let go of her arms and rushed at him with a chained morning star, spinning around dangerously.  Fandri was forced back towards the wall of the tavern and stumbled to the ground.  The Vergai was just about to land a killing blow with his rotating spike, when a long sword covered in green blood, appeared through his chest.  Daeron had come to Fandri’s rescue.

The powerfully-built elf looked dizzy on his feet, with a bandage wrapped around his head from Lakehaven.  He extricated his narrow sword from the Vergai and threw him to the ground.  Then he held his hand down to help up the old halfling.  “Thanks,” panted Fandri.  “I’m getting too old for this.”  He looked around and saw that the Vergai were taking advantage of the chaos and half-carrying, half-dragging the screaming Princess off into the night.

Fandri looked at the other fighters and realised  the Vergai were gaining the upper hand.  Fendi, Sienna and Baja had been knocked out cold and Raja was the only one still fighting, but was totally surrounded by several big fighters.  Old Fandri was just thinking that all was lost when a powerful screech filled the night.  A flapping of great wings and a mighty burst of flame lit up the sky.  The Vergai around Raja screamed and ran after the Princess.

The sky went dark again, after that brief burst of light.  All that Fandri could see was a huge dark shape, blotting out the stars.  It screeched again and a huge burst of flame whooshed right over the top of the fleeing Vergai.  Their thick scaly hides appeared to deflect the flames, but they screamed and howled and ran in all directions.  The winged beast flew to where the other Vergai were running with Shari-Rose and it picked them off her, one by one and threw them far into the distance, where they land with dull thuds.

The beast tenderly picked up Shari-Rose in its great talons and very carefully carried her back to the halflings and dwarves.  Her wet towel flopped to the ground by Old Fandri’s feet.  She looked like a child compared to the enormous creature cradling her in one sharp claw.

By the light from the half-shuttered inn windows, Fandri, Daeron and Raja could see the beast was a great, grey dragon.  Its body was four times as tall as a man and had a thick, scaly hide.  Its wing span must have been about 40 foot or more and the flap of the huge wings brought large gusts of air swirling all around them.  Emerald jewels gleamed from under the wings, as though they were embedded in the scales.  The dragon’s head had many horns and a large mouth with sharp teeth.  Its muzzle was long, with wide nostrils, issuing trails of smoke.

The dragon’s large, yellow eyes looked at each of the fighters below intelligently before gently placing the Princess on the ground.  Shari-Rose stared up at the great beast which had rescued her and was utterly speechless.  She didn’t even have breath to scream in terror.  The dragon flapped its gigantic wings and rose up into the sky.  It circled the inn once, then flew off in the direction of the Vergai.

Excerpt:

“Get the hell out of there. Now.” Jenning’s voice crackled to life in Sabrina’s earpiece.
She ignored his command even while her skin itched, foretelling her sixth sense was kicking in. Yep, she was close.
“Now, Shaw. His friends are heading your way. You—"
She clicked off the receiver to stop the tirade that no doubt would follow.  A few minutes. That’s all she needed.
Tip-toeing up the metal staircase in her black combat-style boots, she inched her way to apartment 203. Eddie Ramer might be able to fool the cops but not her. The bottom feeder had been enticing Caitlyn for weeks with his promise of high paying modeling gigs. And then she’d disappeared.
Coincidence? Yeah, right.
A heavy smell of weed permeated the air, despite the open balconies outside the apartment doors. The metal railing and no-tell-motel-appearance of the building didn’t shock her. In fact it worked in her favor. The thin walls made her privy to the conversations along the journey to her prize.
201. 202. Finally, 203.
Peeking inside was made impossible by the closed drapes. Instead, she crawled under the window, then slid along the wall stopping outside the apartment door. A cacophony of motorcycle engines in the distance signaled Eddie’s friends were getting closer.
Her heart beat heavily while her fingers tingled. Everything inside her longed to grab the gun strapped to her thigh, but she resisted the urge. Only if necessary. She held her breath, keying into the conversation on the other side of the door.
“Let me see what you’ve got, baby.” The voice came from inside.
Sabrina closed her eyes, dispelling the vile thoughts racing around her head. Focus remained the key to her success.
“I thought—" The girl’s shaky voice signaled her fear.
“You have a smokin’ bod, but I gotta know you can sell the goods. That’s the way this works. Only then can I open doors for you.”
Enough.
With one strategically placed kick, her boot separated the lock from the flimsy door. Seconds later, she charged inside, tackling Eddie to the ground. He tried to reverse her dominant position, but she was one step ahead of him, bringing the tip of her blade to his throat, a mere flick away from his carotid artery.
She slid off his chest and eased them both to a standing position, never wavering on the location of the blade. “Now Caitlyn and I are going to leave without any trouble from you or your ragtag group of merry men. Got that?”
His eyebrows furrowed while his lips curled into a smirk. “Caitlyn? She’s ancient history.”
A sinking sensation settled in her gut as Sabrina turned toward the girl. Hovering close to the bed, a young Hispanic girl with striking looks and long dark hair stood, her blouse partially unbuttoned. Definitely not Caitlyn Collins.
Not good.
That half second of non-focus on her part was all Eddie needed to grab her forearm, dislodging the knife and sending it flying across the room into the wall. Despite his bulk, the alcohol reeking from his pores slowed his reflexes.  She easily ducked the clumsy punch he sent her way. When he grasped her bicep and pulled up, that left him open for her counter strike to the round part of his shoulder, followed by a punch to his liver through the intercostal nerve, robbing him of breath, then a chop to the side of his neck, hitting his vagus nerve with enough force to stun.
Sabrina grabbed the girl and ran.
Dread chilled her bones as she bounded down the steps, yanking the frightened girl along with her. For the first time in her life she’d failed her mission. She’d given the Collins family hope when she’d promised to rescue their daughter. Now she was coming back empty handed. There had to be another way.
