Can you tell us what prompted you to
first start writing? What was the first thing you wrote?
I think I began writing when I was in
Junior High School. Nothing like early teen angst to motivate one’s pen, you
know. First story I ever wrote? Two teens. Summer camp. Trapped on the top bunk
by a wolf. Please, someone tell me I’ve improved since then. Haha.
Can you summarize your latest work in
just a few words?
Sorority girl tries to save the world
one bum at a time.
What does a typical writing day involve
for you?
Yelling at my kids, “Hey, I’m trying to
write here.” Haha.
What are you working on next? Do you
have a WIP?
I’m working on a book now called The Bloodhound and the Ninja. It has a
similar flavor to Holding Out for a Hero—romance
with some action thrown in.
Tell us about your travels.
I travel three states in my present
job, and each state line I cross is a river. There’s something about bridges
that speak to me right now. Crossing a bridge is a metaphor for building a
relationship or mending one. I really like that image.
Tell us about your childhood.
I grew up in the deep south. I ate grits
for breakfast, and I know that cathead biscuits are named for their size, not
for their ingredients. I know what “Bless your heart” really means, and I try
never to be with my family of origin when Alabama is playing Auburn. It’s just
never pretty.
Most writers have some quirks – what
are yours?
I never realized I do this until
recently, but apparently I really agonize when my characters refuse to
cooperate and give me the happily ever after I need. I pace the floor and wring
my hands. My husband pointed this out to me just before I finished Cars, Cobras, and Concertos.
I said, “I’ll never get these two
together. They can’t work it out.” He said, “You always say that.”
I blinked at him. “I do?”
“Yes,” he replied.
That’s quirky, don’t you think?
Have you taken any creative writing
courses and would you recommend them?
I’ve been to a lot of workshops, but I
think the most inspiring lecture on creative writing I’ve ever seen was given
by Ray Bradbury. Google An Evening with Ray Bradbury, and you’ll find it.
Another great lecture was a Ted Talk by Elizabeth Gilbert called “Your Elusive
Creative Genius.” I do want to caution you about Gilbert’s comments. I think
her main point is, ‘Give yourself a Break. Don’t let your writing torture you.’
Do it because you enjoy it. Delight in it. What is your joy? That is what
you’re called to do. Do it and delight in it.
What book(s) are you reading at the
moment?
I do a lot of driving, so I’m listening
to Alan Jacobs’ audiobook, The Narnian. I love it so much, I’m also reading it.
If you were stranded on a desert island
and could only take three books with you, what would they be and why?
I’d take The Narnian so I could finish
it. I’d take The Princess Bride because I’ve been wanting to reread it, and for
my third book I’d take ‘100 Quick and Easy Ways to Get Off a Deserted Island’
because I’m practical that way.
